Collecting Photos/Gallery Size Limited?

Hello,
I've just got home eagerly anticipating having my first look at a gallery I finished yesterday but didn't get the time to check properly.
Basically I went through all of my many albums and 'collected' the photos I liked best, and put them in a gallery i made called 'recent photos'.
The idea of this was, visitors could access the gallery and see all the best, most recent photos, in order of when I uploaded them, right back to the first ones i added (if they scrolled down far enough).
However I noticed that there are big gaps in the gallery. Photos that I more recently "collected" and sent to the gallery are not there. Also, when I counted up the total number of photos in the gallery, it comes to 1000.
So is a gallery limited to 1000 photos? I read elsewhere that there is no limit, and that many people have many more than that.
Plus, when I collected the newer photos, nothing indicated it had been unsuccessful or any limit had been reached.
Or is it just a bug, or taking a while to update?
I could have sworn I had more than 1000 photos in a gallery before.

How about keyword galleries?
