Great shot. Really like it. I wonder if I can find an adapter that will let me put my Canon on my Meade telescope (~2000mm) :)

Thanks, guys. And that was with the 40D. Think it would be any better if I got a 7D? Still pondering that one. headscratch.gif

Ok, here's one more. This one has TWO TC 1.4X extenders on my 500. I had processed this earlier, but didn't like how it came out, so I went with the single-TC version. However, upon reprocessing, now I'm thinking it's pretty good. So here we go. 980mm on a crop-body.

Very nice! I will try again and see what I can get out of the 7d. I'm thinking the 40d should be better but should be a giggle to see what it can do. Love the shot with the double tc's, that 500 is showing its class.
Thanks, Richy. You reckon the 40D should be better than the 7D? That's not good news. I was thinking of getting a 7D.

Great shot. The moon is more difficult to shoot than one would think, especially with a long lens. At least I have found this to be true. The rotation of the Earth causes the moon to move out of the frame rather quickly - but of course, the moon is not moving at all.

    Good job.

    Kdog,

I noticed that the bottom of the moon is in sharper focus than the top.

I am wondering if you tilted the lens so that the bottom of the moon was closer than the top. Maybe the next time you could measure the distance from your position to the top of the moon then to the bottom of the moon to ensure a parrelel focal plane.

Hey Sarah, thanks! I'm confused why you say the moon is not moving, because the moon does indeed revolve around the earth, does it not? At any rate, yes, the moon's movement does present some challenges.

Thank you, Pujojo! I've seen some incredibly detailed shots using telescopes with DSLRs, but some that were not as good as what you can get with a good DSLR and super telephoto lens. I'm not sure what issue you are having, but if you think it's shutter slap, then trying using mirror lockup, or Live View.

    Excellent......bowdown.gif

Would you be willing to share what the iso, f-stop & aperature was on your camera?

Thanks! What's reported in the EXIF is this:

    Camera Maker: Canon
    Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
    Lens: EF500mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x
    Image Date: 2010-11-18 20:16:09 -0700
    Focal Length: 700.0mm
    Focus Distance: 4294967295.00m
    Aperture: f/5.6
    Exposure Time: 0.0080 s (1/125)
    ISO equiv: 200
    Exposure Bias: none
    Metering Mode: Center Weight
    Exposure: Manual
    Exposure Mode: Manual
    White Balance: Auto
    Flash Fired: No (Manual)
    Color Space: Adobe RGB (1998)

However, one of the TC's wasn't reporting its existence which threw off the EXIF data by one stop. In actuality, the effective F stop was F8, and the focal length was 980mm. Confusing I know.

Really great work here, Joel. clap.gif I would not have thought to use two TCI's. That first shot is great....the second is spectacular.

    Take care,
