Elk in Arkansas

As strange as it sounds, Arkansas has an Elk population estimated at +/- 500 head. They stay in a general area known as "Lost Valley", outside of Jasper, AR. We saw them in this area two days in a row. On this day, there were two other bulls out besides this one. They would get close to his harem, and he'd move em', like he's doing here.

    Hey Craig,

Yeah, I was surprised to hear that AR had Elk, when I heard about them 3 years ago!

I don't know why I even own a tripod, much less a Gitzo with RRS head. A $12.00 tripod could sit in my office just as good as the "fancy" one rolleyes1.gif

    Hey Mary,

The Elk are wild, not fenced nor raised.

In that area of Ark...everyting is free roaming.....I kid you not the farmers will open gates and let the pigs and cattle out to free range if the yloss a head or 2 what the heck....if they know about one hit by a vehicle in time they come out and butcher it on the spot and take to good meat home and very little is branded...so if you hit something it was something gone wild cause all of my livestock is in my fences..........they are a funny type of people...I lived there thru jr high (middle school) and high school and the joke you hear....well 99.9% of them are true.......

Until about 1972 there were no black bears in Ark wither but they dropped off several hundred up in that area which surprised the heck out of me going out to get milk cows early one morn and seeing my first blackie...it was a little blackie.......

Came across a big bunch on Oregon coast line somewheres. Pulled up for some pics. Was something to take it all in as the light was fading to night.
