Happy Holidays--a Portrait

So I worked on my Christmas card this weekend. I have my new fancy lens which was too tight for the room I shot in. I told the kids to do the usual Christmas card thing, look at the camera smile etc. but I was looking for the candid/outtakes in between :rofl. This is my favorite of the bunch and will be part of my holiday card (they thought I was fiddling with the settings). It just cracks me up, they look so miserable! I love it. The card will consist of only the outtakes.
On the downside, when the people/friends and family that want to hire me to shoot portraits see this, well I bet they won't be calling me.

Hope you enjoy. I've gotten into the spirit of things early this year--feel free to hate me :rofl.

Do you get why it amuses me, or am I just crazy?

They look like two adults right after the holiday season is over, so yes, I see the humor here for sure :).

I can see why it amuses you AND you are crazy...rolleyes1.gif

I assume that this captures your kids' personality, so that those viewing it will be equally amused. In such a case, this makes for a great holiday shot.

If OTOH, it is amusing because you have developed a warped sense of humor from hanging around in this forum too much, then you need to ignore any encouragement you get here and rethink if the grandparents, aunts, etc. will roll their eyes at the pic and your taking photos of them at the holiday gatherings.

The loss of any business is not a negative, cuz none of them would actually pay you.deal.gif

Well it doesn't really capture their personalities. They are rambunctious to say the least which makes this shot even funnier to me.

I thought about the grandparents etc. they would not be happy at all with this shot alone, so I did a collage of the outtakes, some where they are cracking up etc. I think they may just be able to put up with it.
But this shot just made my day. It has an Adams Family vibe I like.

Definitely going to be a unique Christmas card!!

I love this photo, btw. I'll bet the kids will too - years and years and years from now.

At least if they are related to you. But beware, one or both of them may be carrying cameras by then.

Liz, I really love this image; it beautifully captures certain aspects of childhood. If it were mine, I'd definitely show it off. BUT: you have lost your everlovin' mind if you think you should send this out as your holiday card! rolleyes1.gif

Would a Diane Arbus send it out as her holiday card? Probably. But then she ended up with her head in a gas oven. rolleyes1.gif Really. Rethink this. bowdown.gif

rolleyes1.gifpoint taken but I'm glad you like it so much.
It just dawned on me, it kind of reminds me a bit of your shot of your daughter on halloween at an art gallery, she was in costume.

Well it was supposed to be part of a collage of shots, this being one of them and my favorite of the outtakes, but I wound up loving it so much I didn't think it was in the same league as the other outtakes (this one being the best), so I yanked it from the collage and cards. But it is one I'm keeping and framing (this says a lot because I rarely frame any of my shots). I did very much want it to be the holiday card, my husband agreed, but it would have upset some of the family and they wouldn't have gotten it.
    Thanks B.D. :)

Liz, for what it's worth, I love the shot. It's one of the few "portraits" I've ever seen that makes me go "cool!" If someone sent me that as my Christmas card, I'd like it! Of course, I'm not a very traditional person.

The photo is wonderful, the children are gorgeous, the processing is great, but I have finally figured out what is bugging me about this image - it's really simple: the lettering looks like blood and looks really creepy.

    Thanks:)
I"m actually making about 10 prints and sending this as my holiday card to people who I think will appreciate it for what it is. The rest will get the other "safe" card.

I am going to fix it though and write "joy to the world" as per Richard's suggestion because it cracks me up more.

    yes! you are right.
That's what kind of adds to the darkness of this shot, and you're right it's slightly disturbing this way. It almost like dripping blood.

I did like the creepy factor but maybe slightly too creepy. Thanks Sara.

Funny how my holiday card naturally lead to talk of suicide via head in gas stove and slit wrists--says a whole lot rolleyes1.gif.

I think Plath took the whole family down with her, as I recall.

On that cheerful note - happy Thanksgiving!

Well, as long as you don't add a dripping effect...

I wonder what would happen if you simply changed the type - font and color - you may be able to cheer it up a bit.
