Honestly, I could not have done this without my friend who came to assist me. It was humid and hot and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds. I was sweating like a hog with my finger on the shutter, waiting for a smile because this cute kid was one tough cookie (having just woken up from a nap.) This friend entertained him - and while holding a diffuser too.

And she even managed to snap this photo of my ninja self with her phone:

Number 7 is the best. Love the sharpness and the soft light. Really good photo. Photo Nr. 4 - it is a nice photo but I think you have played with the highlights and shadow slider to much, because it gave the lady weird effect in the face area. But still very nice photo session. Congratulations.

Hi, Tom! Thanks for the comment! I think I know what you mean about 4. I didn't do a lot of recovery on it as you can see below (just a little), mostly I desaturated (again just a little) after I adjusted the color a bit, then brightened her face (this may have something to do with also).

I think it's because I smoothed out her face a smidge. It was the only one out of them (wanted to try it and see if there's a difference since her face was slightly OOF from the shallow DOF). Thank you for answering that for me, because apparently it *is* noticeable and not in a good way

4 is actually my favorite - I didn't notice artefacting at this size, but I'm on a fairly small (although calibrated) monitor.

In my experience, I'm usually not happy with my results with skin smoothing unless the face is pretty large in the image overall. On close-ups, I don't end up with Barbie Dolls like I do in shots like the one under discussion here. I'd guess whatever technique you used would give you better results with a different image.
