Toroweap seems to be a popular spot recently... I was there a couple of weeks ago on the last day of a week long southwest trip. It was a rainy day and I had to ditch my car about halfway through the 61 mile dirt road due to mud and hitch a ride the rest of the way. It looked like it was going to be a nice sunset so I set up facing west, but some ominous clouds began rolling in.



It started to become obvious that the good light would be the underglow of the clouds facing east, so I quickly relocated and was able to get a good exposure before the light disappeared.



Comments always welcome. These are sharpened for the web by the way, so they do appear a bit oversharpened from the originals. Thanks for looking.

No. Normally I would have blended two exposures for a scene like this, but I was literally sprinting across the canyon to quickly set up as the light vanished, and was able to get one good exposure on autofocus, aperture priority f/11, just lucky I guess to get the entire tonality in one shot. There does appear a slight halo on the mountains, but that is artifact from the sharpening.

I love them both. The first has great contrast and I like the "flow" of the clouds. The second is a breathtaking view, nice composition, and the colors are awesome - also impressive that it was a single exposure shot! Nice job scrambling to get the shot.

Really nice job. Both shots are great. I can imagine you scrambling around to set up for the best shot before the light is out....I think a lot of us have done that

That second shot is great! Like you said a little over-sharpened for its size, but the colors are ridiculous.

Thanks for the comments. I feel lucky in a way to have gotten the good light, as it is quite the journey to get there and I just as easily could have been disappointed. I highly recommend it if you're in the area.

What a beautiful pair. Love the B/W, I love the direction of the clouds and their depth. Both images really have great clarity and strong leading lines. Love the color esp the sky. Well done.

Hi Gary, sure you can use it. I'd appreciate your suggestions. I wish that I had included more foreground rocks but I didn't have the time to compose it again. Ive gone back and forth with the rock lower right. Thanks for your help and happy thanksgiving.

Wow, incredible colors! I never heard of this place before Dgrin, but it is a popular spot here. I think light like what you have is just the thing to make that tricky composition pop.
