Tele-Converter Question

At the risk of embarrassment at my being a 'obvious noob' at asking this... I've been reading around ebay, and have a few questions.

1.) Will any make of tele-converter work on any lens, for nikon cameras like the D70?
2.) Is Quantaray part of Sigma? Will a tele-coverter designed for a Sigma lens work on a Quantaray lens?

Mainly, i'm very new to this part of cameras, first camera that's not a point`n`shoot / something-with-pop-out-lens (Nikon D70) should arrive in a few days, and these tele-converter things sound nice, doubles the distance of the lens i use, I'm just not 100% sure on compatibility.

Yes i tried to google this, and got mixed results, some places said like, Tamron lenses absoultely have to go onto a Tamron tele-converter and no other. Some sites say any tele-converter works with any lens... I'm just confused in general and looking for some CORRECT information regarding this subject, please.

Some TC only work with specific lenses, well, at least in the Canon world. Mainly with the "big whites" 300/2.8, 400/2.8, etc. I was surprised to see but they list they lenses that they work on and I guess they only support those lenses. I'm sure that is probably not the case with Sigma. Just be aware.. buying a cheap TC and throwing it on a nice piece of glass is like taking and smearing a layer of petroleum jelly on the lens. The teleconverter has optics as well, so if you have good glass, don't cheap out on a TC.

It is a confusing subject. The simple answer is NO. Not all lenses will work with all teleconverters. Some t/cs will give you full functionality, some will give you partial, and some just won't work at all. You'll need to check the compatibility for each lens and t/c. The data is usually available, but perhaps not on eBay. Check the manufacturers' websites, Adorama and B&H. Don't pull the trigger 'till you're sure of what you're getting, or you could have a nice looking paperweight.

Someone on the Nikonians site came up with a chart showing compatibility for teleconverters on Nikon cameras.

    http://blog.nikonians.org/archives/2005/06/nikonians_telec.html

It is a pretty complicated issue. Nikon teleconverters are the easiest (only work on higher end Nikon AF-s telephoto lenses), others are more involved.

Quantaray is a house brand for Ritz camera, and their items can come from different manufacturers (commonly Sigma and Tamron I think) You basically need to compare the Quantaray lens to those of the third party companies to figure out who made it.

thanks guys for all the information, at least i understand somewhat now.

And if i look on ebay and the auction just describes it as "2x teleconverter for "All Nikon digital SLR cameras"" yet doesn't say what lenses it's designed to work with, or even a specific manufacturer, it's probably to be avoided i'm guessing.

Yes, but you don't get this without taking a 'hit' - ie you lose 2 stops (1 if you use a 1.4x TC)
Ignoring the image quality aspect, you'll probably lose reliable AF - depending on the body you use, as body + lens combos will only AF upto a certain point.
You'll probably find yourself having to increase the iso setting in order to regain shutter speed - at a time when you may well like it being even faster (than without the TC on) - because you've just doubled the focal length of the lens - this'll generally have noise implications :)

Can't help re actual Qs as don't know anything about the specific kit mentioned (use Canon)

As everyone has said, you need more information than that before buying. At a minimum, you need the exact brand and model of the TC. Then you can find out on the Web whether it will work with your lens and body.

That's what I thought. Thanks for clearing up this confusing subject everyone.

The main reason i started a thread about this, is I'm sure others would of been confused like me, and now they can read this too.

Good reason! And when you or anyone else finds a TC they want and cannot find compatibility answers, just do the same: Post a new Thread!
