So i get bored and look around camera gear on ebay sometimes, wasting countless hours there lately (i have no job no school, no where to be or anything to do) and i came upon this:

Opteka 500-1000mm Telephoto Preset Lens for Nikon

In my mind i'm thinking... something with this much zoom distance, all the other ones i've seen are like $5k - $10k on ebay, why would this one be so cheap.. comes with a tele-converter too.

Although I've never heard of the brand before. So looking for input from you guys, cheap knock-off, total waste of money?

Granted, i don't actually even have more than $20 right now, just thinking, you know, for the future.

looks just like the super cheap Soiratone 400mm lens I bought over 30yrs ago for 49.99.....if it is really
as good as that moon image then it is not bad for the price.....but for that price i would look on ebay for
a 500 mirror lens...larger around but much shorter and probably much better pix......I have seen Nikon and
Vivatar Series one Mirror lenses sell on Ebay...........those 2 in older manual focus were cream of the crop
when manufactured........ The Nikon Mirror lenses ahve had a revitalization in the past few month....some
on EBay are truly way over priced and some seem to be selling very reasonable....I saw NEW vivatars but
they are not the SERIES 1 (that was Viv's PRO line of lenses which I had owned several 70-210 - Series
1 lenses...loved them to death).......but i feel you would be better off with a mirror lens rather than that
    cheap junk...........

    Good Luck

I've seen a few 200mm or 300mm AF vivitar zoom lenses used on ebay, the Series 1 ones, saw one once go for $50 used, but it's a film lens so i wasn't so sure about using it on a modern digital camera, and most of my friends wern't 100% sure either, so i never considered it much, other than watching it to the end for the hell of it.

Before buying any manual focus lens for your Nikon make sure it is an AIS lens or it had been reworked to AIS so it does not damage your electrical contacts.......Film lenses work fine on digital Cameras if you make sure they are AIS at least........just remeber to set camera for manual focus to tun off the switches that would normally autofocus newer autofocus lenses..........
