Vegas Baby!

Two weeks ago my wife and I hopped on a plane to Las Vegas for the weekend to shoot a wedding at the Wynn Hotel. Super fun relaxed couple (I've shot two of her friends weddings). Thankfully, the weekend was not all work and we had a fair amount of relaxation and fun too.

The only weird thing was that since she booked the wedding as a package with the hotel, only the hotel photographers could take pictures (besides guests with non-pro cameras) during the ceremony. I was cool with it because the couple was, and I do understand the hotel's point of view. The good news is that the hotel photogs also took all of the family portraits. It made me realize that I need to hire someone to do that for me at every wedding :)

Here's a few, many many more on my site.

Love #4. The arched roof and dance floor give some great perspective to the shot.

Thanks for the love! I'm really happy with the way these turned out, but I had higher hopes to be honest. We were a bit limited on time and location - originally we were going to do a day after shoot, but it got canned. Shooting inside of a working casino was much more difficult that I imagined :)

I bet they're not too crazy about shooting in the casino--especially on the floor :)

Yeah.. we never setup the softbox and just ran with a VAL and a bare speedlight for all of this. There's things I would have done differently if I was shooting anyplace else, but I kept having this image of a 8 foot tall 400lbs man putting a black bag over my head and dragging me off ....

4, 9 and 10 are my faves. I wish #10 didn't have the reflections from the speedlite, though. Sometimes I just love the symmetry from a centered composition like that. Great job in what had to be a tough atmosphere! Joe Pesci wants to see you out back...

Thanks everyone! Ted #4 was outdoors on a little patio stuffed next to the hotel where they had their first dance. Light is all natural for this shot. #8 is indoors though, so you never know.

You can see the same spot as #4 in this shot.

I really love #1 and especially #3! I'm primary for a wedding in Vegas this coming march, so I really appreciate the set for giving me inspiration!

Looks pretty! Make sure that you are allowed to take pictures there - I saw on that website that they have onsite photographers. I think if I was going to take a couple smeplace to get "vegas" style photos, it probably wouldn't be the strip. Way too crowded there. Maybe Fremont Street? Or outside of town looking back on the town?

Oh yes, they have already arranged it with the venue. These clients have definite ideas about their wedding photos too, and they told me the cake topper has a zombie theme rolleyes1.gifAnd thanks for the tip about Fremont St. I've never been to Vegas, so we are flying there in advance and scoping our locations near the venue.

Also, to not derail your thread, I was wondering what iso #3 was taken at?

Numbers 4, 7, and 8 are my faves.

#1 is good, but there's a ceiling light reflected in the window that's very distracting; it looks like a flying saucer buzzing the Strip. Think you could clone it out?

#2 is a very cool effect. At first, I thought you were shooting DOWN through an open grid into the room below!

#9 is perfectly framed to use as a business card. Just add text. Very nice shot.

I understand the hotel's point of view, too - "Hey, people are paying us an OBSCENE amount of money to have a wedding here, so why not SQUEEZE some more out of them by forcing them to use only our photographers? They want to get married here so badly that they'll agree to anything - we've got them by the [throat]!"
What I said when I saw the Grand Canyon for the first time: "The wide ain't wide enough and the zoom don't zoom enough!"

Thanks Will & Cat. Will good call on the reflected light in #1! The room the groom was chilling in was crazy cool - a massive suite.
