Let me start off by saying, I own a 420EX, 550EX, 580EX and 580EXII.. BUT, I'm doing a lot more sports and have a need for remote flash.

I'm considering the 430EXII because I won't usually ever need a full power flash. Most of the time I'd be using 1/2 power at best. With the 430EXII I can get a flash and power pack for under $400. Where as if I went with something cheap, like say, a Sunpak 283 (which I also own 2 of) I'd have to go with something like a Lumedyne or any of the other big batter packs with an adapter for the 283 which greatly increases the price due to just the battery pack.

Just wondering, those that own the 430EXII, how have they been working for you? My other issue with the 283's is reliability. Have had way too many fry under light use and I've never had issues with my Canon strobes.

I would suggest another 550EX for a remote application and high-voltage power supply. They are very well built and 1/2 power on the 430EX II is probably less power on the 550EX. You also gain another "master" flash just in case ...

I am using a 3rd party high-voltage power supply and so far it has worked great on a 580EX.

With a 550EX you should be able to stay well under $400USD, possibly under $300, and have very fast recycling in a very durable unit.
