1978 Ferrari 308 GTB : Magnum PI

Got the chance to shoot this for about 30 minutes on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the weather didn't hold up so I couldn't get as many shots as I wanted to, but it was still a lot of fun. It was pretty crazy to see how things have changed in over 30 years at Ferrari! Still a really beautiful car, though.

Nice shots of a beautiful car. I owned a 1977 308 GTB....bought new in early '77. I got one of the last fiberglass bodies made before they went to steel bodies about mid-year. While I enjoyed the car immensely, I would never have kept it had it been my only car. It was difficult to get in and out of....and I was only in my 30's. More annoying than that, the pedals were in an offset position relative to the seating position....made for uncomfortable driving for long periods. I kept it for a couple of years then went back to Porsches....way friendlier cars.

What a coincidence!

This one is definitely steel bodied...very heavy. I agree with you on all the other points as well. I was able to drive it a bit, and it you basically have to fall into the car, not sit in it. It is extremely low! The pedals were definitely biased to the right as well, and they were so close together that my foot kept tapping the brake when I pressed the accelerator! You had to stand on the clutch to change gears as well.

Very nice work! I've always been a Ferrari fan, and really like the 308. I love the lighting on the second (and even third) shot, gives a very dramatic feel to it. And that's a great angle on the driving shot - I assume you were in a chase car for that one?

thanks very much! i love the 308 too, the design is timeless. the rolling shot is actually a rig shot. i designed and built a boom that mounts with suction cups and extends out to get rolling shots. i was a bit nervous trying it on a vintage ferrari though, haha.

Great pics, the first one looks like an old road&track pic. Can I ask what you used for lighting on the second one?

Sure! I used multiple exposures, and placed an SB600 @ 1/4 power on the nose, front wheel and rear wheel. I blended all the shots together in post to get one image.
