Keywords: how are they ordered?

I'm using keywords as name tags so someone can click on their swimmer's name to find all the photos of that swimmer on the site. Some photos have multiple names to key word and they seem to have a mind of their own about what order they show up in. What is the default ordering method? Is there a way to make them alpha order?

I think they show in the reverse order of the date the keyword was added to the photo.

I think I wasn't clear in my question! On one photo that has multiple keywords, how are those keywords ordered?

birders, abird, bbird, cbird, dbird, ebird,fbird, 3bird, 1bird, 2bird,
came out like this
bbird birders cbird abird ebird dbird fbird 1bird 2bird 3bird

Doesn't make any sense to me.

Glad to see I'm not the only one! Know of any way to force an alpha order?

It's very frustrating to me that it seems to be rather random, especially since I just learned that only the first 30 get indexed. Andy said they get indexed in the order you list them, but I'm not seeing that. Many of my stock photos have nearly 50 keywords (because for those photos that are also on Smug, I don't normally bother re-keywording them) but it seems some of the more important words get left off.

It hasn't been my experience that they remain in the order I list them either. On the Homepage tab in the control panel, keywords are listed in alpha order, so I thought they would be in alpha order under the photos as well. Since they are clickable, making it easy to find sub-groups of photos, it would be nice to have those keywords in an order that makes it easy to find what you're after.

By "Alpha" order, you mean alphabetical, right? I would be OK with them displaying that way. But if SmugMug is going to cull my keywords down to 30, it would be so much better if they take the first one I've listed & the second, and go from there. I list the most crucial ones first, so then I at least know that they won't be culled. They should definitely also have something that stops you or shows you when you've reached thirty, because it's crazy to have to count them.

And yes, you are right that they definitely do not stay in the same order you put them in when they're displayed under your photo.
