newborn photography setup HELP

I had to Photograph my first newborn yesterday, i usually photograph toddlers and children outdoors, natural, candid and do really well. But newborns, thats another challenge! the lighting was aweful,( natural window light) i thought i new what settings to use from reading online forums etc..... i know i need paractice! i got 3 shots out of 100! BLAH! but alot of photoshop had to be done. Any tips for next time. I have 2 more to do but its family and practice so theyre not expecting much.
