The Subway

For anyone who has hiked the Subway, you know what a rewarding hike it is, despite that last 800 foot climb uphill at the end of the trail back! We set out before dawn and spent the entire day there as most do. As iconic a location as it has become, it was a personal goal of mine to make the hike, and the landscape is magical. Here are a few from the day:

1. Archangel Falls- the first photo stop we made

2. The famous crack. My two takes on it

3.

4. Swirling leaves in the Subway, 30 second exposure for the leaves, 2 seconds at f/11 for the rest.

5. Another subway view

6. And another

7. Still more

8. The compositions are endless

The biggest challenge was getting shots without people in them (or cloning them out) as we had the place to ourselves for about 30 minutes then it started getting crowded. Thanks for looking!

The Subway is a great hike in a special place. You've captured some of the magic of the place--especially liked the swirling leaves!

    Chris-
Beautiful photos as usual. I love how you get your photos to contain such crisp detail along with the soft motion blur. Colors are beautiful as well.

thumb.gif These are Great! No. 2: best I've seen. The light in that water looks like gold. No. 7 is a shot I haven't seen before....very nice, as they all are with perfect exposures.

wonderful series. the colors are perfect. really like your compostions you've chosen. Did you take the more difficult route in? what time of the day were you shooting?

Thanks everyone. Doug, thanks, I was about to say "no, I took the easy way," but that wasn't right! I hiked from the Left Fork like most, not from the top on the canyoneering route.

The subway is best shot from 11-1, as the angle of the sun during that time casts the golden light on the canyon walls.

Wow. WOW! I'm in awe. Such a beautiful place, such great photos! bowdown.gif I said to myself, #1 is great, and then I saw #2, which amazed me, and then #3 came and #4 ... each more stunning than the previous. When I travel to the US, I would definitely love to see this place!
