Hello friends! :wave

I'm gonna to buy a 70-300 mm lens for my Canon 10D. (They match my budget at the moment) I've narrowed it down to:

#1: Sigma Af 70-300/4,0-5,6 DL Super Macro II
#2: Tamron Af 70-300/4,0-5,6 LD macro

Pretty much the same lenses, and the price tag is almost the same too. Wich one is the better alternative, you'd say? :scratch :scratch :scratch

Regards / Matty

Mate thats a bit of a shot in the dark question so here is a shot in the dark answer from someone whom does not own nor has used either.

I would choose sigma over tamron any day.

headscratch.gif actually ...........i think there is a 70-300 tamron in the fungus cupboard under my bed. Forget it though, its for my old AE-1.

    Matty,
Despite gus comments both Tamron and Sigma makes some excellent lenses - I own some of each companies. BUT, they also make some clunkers if you aren't careful. And the 70-300 zooms are probably full of a lot of optical compromises - even Canon's. The lenses you mentioned are also fairly slow and probably have more aberrations than primes or shorter range zooms.
One of the first lenses I bought years ago was a 28-300mm zoom - full of chromatic aberation. With modern software you can deal with that, but it is not fun to have a couple extra steps with each frame.

I would think about a prime, or perhaps Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di which gets very high marks. I own it and love it. I see one for sale in our Flea Market thread. It is even useable with Tamrons telextenders.

Generally my experience has been opposite that of gus - i generally prefer Tamron to Sigma - BUT you MUST know the particular lens not the manufacturers name. I have Sigma lenses that are excellent also. Their 150 f2.8 macro seems very good.

I cant speak for the sigma. I have the Tamaron and think it was a good value for the price. I have had occasional focus issues with it in lower light situations, but you will have that with any slower lens. Speed costs.

Here are a few shots I took with it.

    I have the Tamron AF70-300/f/4-5.6 macro 1:2

I bought it before I had any understanding of lenes or what the heck f4/5-6 ment. I wanted macro......I got macro.

That said, It 's not bad for the money, but it is soft.

    Here is a sample: 300 mm iso 200 f/10 1/400
