Updates to LR do not alter your image files or catalogs in any way.
In the update from LR2 to LR3 the catalogs files were updated - after the software specifically asked for permission to do this - but it did not delete the old catalog, but simply created a newer version as well.
Having said that, I have not updated to LR3.3 yet as I have not felt it offered me any significant reason to. I have updated PS and ACR to 6.3 though without issue.

I installed 3.3 - the experimental version - for the purpose of its support of G12 RAW files, it works just fine.

And surprise, surprise. I just now fired up LR, and the regular 3.3 has been released.
