I have seen many images of this, and while I continue to tell myself i need to get there but haven't been there yet.
Thanks to schmoo I now have a perspective of the spot. It looks like you need a long lens to shoot this. Out of curiosity what focal length did you schmoo, and you Andy use?

You don't necessarily have to have a long lens, but I liked to have options. I do believe I was using the 16-35 for this one, and I was standing fairly close. I had to, since the area in front of that particular rock is usually blocked by a couple of other photographers, so you have to get snuggly (and occasionally annoyed when they step in front of you.)
I have several shots at 200 but that was too close. But what I love about this beach is that the rock formations provide so many possibilities.

Ian, Andy and Schmoo you guys did great!! I love all of these, you definitely timed it right and came away with some nice stuff. It's refreshing to see a a nice wide shot, with the arch minimized like Schmoo did.
Great shots from everyone. I love the change in mood depending on whether the shot is wide or zoomed in. I agree, with the longer lens you feel you are in a cave.
These are great! I was convinced that the Ian's and Andy's were shot from inside a cave until I saw Schmoo's!
Nice to see the different perspectives from three accomplished photographers
Better late than never! Here's two of mine from there. Guess it's looking a bit repetitive, but I was shooting with the 24-105, the first was at 35mm and the second at 24 (on a 50D).
First of all, great shot Ian, it looks almost manmade it's so perfect. As for the other pile-on-folks....lol, nice shots too, I do rather like the left side perspective of Travis.
::drool:: ok now I want to go there... only 130 mile drive from home... just need to find a spare day that I don't mind spending half of it driving there and back for!

Awesome photos
We drove from Mt. View You could take off a little early then drive past the beach about 15 miles to Lucia where you might have some lunch at the motel there (or maybe it's an "Inn"). Lunch in Lucia is something you shouldn't miss. Then mosey on back to the beach for sunset
