:D There needs to be a bigger smiley face emoticon.
Ok truth be told, I hardly slept last night, and I kept waking up to check the results. I think it's the first time on a Mega where I thought I had a chance, but I had some serious competition.

When I got the PM from Sean I did a little dance and actually got out of bed a full half hour earlier than usual just because, lol.

Thank you thank you guys--feels too good. Now to let my family know (the ones in the shot) who keep asking me about the results.

I am valiantly trying to avoid making a Sally Fields style acceptance speech:)

Thanks again and to my stiff competition too--you had me sweating.
    Liz A.

You rocked, it Liz! Have you done (or will you do) a setup and behind the scenes for this one? I'd love to know how you lit it, posed it... and what your family thought of the session!!!! :giggle

ETA: Another detail I just spotted (above and beyond your young diva workin' it): all the socks and bare feet. Perfect!

Thanks guys :D. Still on a high today.

I knew I had a good idea for the theme, and as you know I wasn't the only one with the idea. My original version was also with toys, but well i wasn't feeling the set up and neither were some other dgrinners, it lacked a background etc. I didn't have much time to reshoot the toys and on reshoot it still lacked so much. Then I went out of town. :)

Ok so some have asked for the BTS (divamum I had to google bts rolleyes1.gif).

Got to CT for an early Christmas--After a few hours of mingling eating and drinking, I noticed everyone was feeling pretty good including myself. So I mentioned the contest, the details, my toy failure and asked if they'd be wililng to help me recreate the scene--I don't know if it was the martinis and obviously the Jim Beam, but they jumped on it--furniture was moved, kids were called from the game room, people chose their own spots---My sister-in-law made it clear she wanted the Mary Magdalene role. You will also note the laptop on the table--the original Leonardo Last Supper was on the screen, and they kept referring back to it in between shots. I knew the laptop was there when I shot this, but I figured it added to the whole "modern day" thing.

I can not tell you how much I laughed during this shoot--as Michswiss stated "it was a hoot". So many shots were blurry because I kept laughing and the camera would shake.
I had no tripod and somwhat low light for my 25mm f2.8 and my initial handheld shots weren't working. So we used a low table and stacked presents on top of it and i gently placed my camera on top of the last gift and put in a 2 second timer (while still gently holding the camera so it wouldn't fall off). So about the lighting--what you see is what you get, I didn't use any extra lighting and I had it on ISO 500 because I didn't want this to be too grainy.
Also, I didn't set the people up-they picked their roles and some tried to really adhere to the parts while others sort of did their thing--i.e. my daughter with the face--she did that on the very last shot, either as a reaction to overstilumation or to cheer up her brother who had started to cry because he wanted to go back and play with the wii.

    here is an outtake-
    1123718897_nzS3r-L.jpg

    1123722790_TJokj-L.jpg

As you can see both are tilted--I knew they would be because of my makeshift stand--you can also see how they were consulting the computer--some were taking it really seriously while others, not so much.

Ok on to the processing. I used LR3 to sharpen and change the wb and to crop to the golden ration and straighten the horizon--then I went to picnik were I desaturated a smidge, you can tell it was waaaay too warm and applied the fake Holga effect (which is black and white with a blasted out middle and dark edges) but I faded it back to 85%. That is pretty much it--I don't think I'm leaving anything out.

It was a memorable evening and when I told my sister in law the results she said "I knew you would, it all came together so easily, it was meant to be" :D.

Thanks guys--it's not much of a step by step--but the shoot was a blurr. As you can see my processing isn't much of a step by step either, but it works for me--also although I use LR3 these days, I still heavily relay on Picnik.

    Thanks again guys:)
    Liz A.

All of which goes to prove that A. a good idea B. an understanding of the technical *requirements* to execute it well trump purpose-built equipment and all the software in the world. You knew what you needed to do to get the shot, and made it work with what you had. Speaking as the queen of McGyver and "necessity is the mother of invention" makeshift setups that counts as SERIOUS awesome right there thumb.gif (I'm finally getting purpose-built equipment, but I almost feel like a fraud when I use it rolleyes1.gif)

The most amazing thing is that you had such perfect LIGHT in that room - were there other lamps anywhere, or is that pendant that efficient?!

It's really wonderful, Liz, and the sense of family fun that jumps out of it makes it even better. You can TELL that you were all having a great time with this. I'm so pleased not only for your (richly deserved) competition success, but that your whole family has this AWESOME memory from this holiday season. Talk about win-win!!
