How frequrently used are the social features of smugmug?

I'm working on my smugmug application, and I'd like to provide users the ability to view other users' pictures. However, WHICH users do they view?
Do smugmug users frequently take advantage of the friends/family functionality? I personally didnt realize it was there until i looked at the api.
Is the best way to just let them type in a username?
