Road Closed!
Every winter, Washington State Route 20 through the North Cascades is closed due to snow and avalanche hazards. This is a wonderful road for motorcycles and sports cars. Trucks and RVs, please stick to I-90 and keep the road fun for the rest of us.
Our road trip begins at Rockport where there are hundreds of bald eagles this time of year. This shot looks east, towards our destination.
Almost all of the smaller waterfalls along the route are frozen over and create some very interesting scenes. There are even large and dangerous icicles hanging from the roofs of the tunnels.
The road down to the little village of Diablo is always well cleared. There seems to be quite a climate change zone on the other side of the bridge across the river, though.
There are so many great mountain photos to take, it's hard to pick out the really good ones. In the second shot, I can't tell if that's a cloud or snow!
It's still not cold enough in December for the lake to have a lot of ice on it but, some of the patterns can be interesting and there are lots of interesting textures.
Just for some contrast, here are both a winter and summer photo of Diablo Lake:
Just around the corner from the lookout point above the lake, we reach the end of the road for this season. At this time of year, the sun seems to set both early and fast so, we didn't linger much longer.
I think almost all of the photos are geo-tagged accurately, if you are interested. Hope you enjoyed!

I think my favorites are the two lake shots (reflections & patterns).
Thanks for sharing.
