Having the dust mask not cover the nose kinda defeats the purpose, dontcha think? ;-)
My initial reaction was similar to that of thoth. I thought that the blinds got in the way of the image. Then I thought about it a little more...it gives them a 'caged in' effect. The people in there seem to be working pretty hard and not in the greatest conditions (this coming from a spoiled office worker). There just seems to be so little joy in the picture. I think the blinds giving the 'caged in' feeling really add to she shot. "I'm exhausted, I want to get out. But I can't." After a little thought and looking at the image, that's what it says to me.
I like it. I think the blinds give it an air of the forbidden picture - As far as the lack of heat, I think they're just trying to prove that they aren't a sweat shop
I like everything about this one. This is a wonderful capture of a sewing factory. The blinds give it the "hide it from the public" view, the first sewing machine gives enough to tell the story, the coats that are hanging and they are wearing tells me they probably do not have heat (and have poor sweatshop work conditions), and the glance makes me want to know what she is thinking about all of this.
I think it's pretty brilliant that you shot through the blinds--The people are not supposed to be seen but rather hidden away--makes me think of a sweat shop.
The fact that she's making eye contact with you makes it more personal too--I don't know if that makes sense, but you are not just observing, she knows you are aware of them.

Unfortunately; I believe this picture conveys reality - through the obvious working conditions.

I assume it's winter where this was shot, but do they not believe in a heater? Jackets and caps gives the impression it's cold in there.
The shot is too busy for me I think, Jen. The stripes of the blinds, while "caging" in the subjects, are just a bit much.

Sad but effective!
