back button focus on Canon 1DmkIV?

This question may have been asked elsewhere, but I can't find it. Sorry. If so, please just re-direct me.

I would like to experiment with using the AF-ON button to control focus (vs. 1/2 shutter) and I've read my user manual from cover to cover as well as the white paper for the camera and can't, for the life of me, find out how to set it up.

Could someone please tell me or point me to the instructions? :dunno

Thanks very much.

Refer to the User Manual. If you wish, you can get a copy here:

    http://media.the-digital-picture.com/Owners-Manuals/Canon-EOS-1D-Mark-IV-Owners-Manual.pdf

Searching for the keywords is easier via the PDF so it's helpful to keep a copy on a computer.

First, make sure that your AF mode is set to "One-Shot" AF. AI-Servo mode is continuous and AF will not "latch" and confirm.

Make sure the Custom Function IV-1 is set to default (0) or any number except 4, which disables the "AF-ON" button. If you do set CF IV-1 to another number make sure you understand how that function works or ask here.

Make sure that CF IV-2 is set to "0", else the button function is inverted with the "*/Magnify" button.

I think that should get you working. thumb.gif

Ziggy, I'm not sure how the AF mode relates to the AF-ON feature? I use both all the time with AF-ON. In fact using AI-Servo is great for when you have the shutter NOT autofocusing, because the whole point of taking AF away from the shutter release is so that you can click a picture at any moment without the camera having to double-check focus...

If the camera is set to the default Custom Functions then yes, the "AF-ON" button will activate the continuous AF in AI-Servo mode. You get a brief flash of the selected AF point(s) but no AF latch or AF confirmation. If the lens is set to manual mode you will get confirmation but only when manually focused on a viable subject.

Thanks for the advice. I'm experimenting with it now. :D
