want to PP this photo?

I would love to see how others would PP this image, it is sooc via Lightroom, I don't think I did anything to it, and I gave it a general crop. Pardon the off color due to my use of floor and table lamps to help brighten the light in this north facing window.
This is my favorite from a recent session I requested from a friend of mine, I did the baby shower and then the baby at 2 months, so I wanted an updated photo of this beautiful toddler.

I am not sure if this is the best way to post an image for others to work on, if there is a better way, tell me. And I have already edited a version. I think I will post mine later. The talk about over done skin and eyes in children's editing got me thinking this would be a fun experiment ! Maybe even enough for a new category???

Trudy, great idea either for children's category or in general, just to see how others interpret the same image in post processing! Will give it a try after this hectic weekend.

    What do you think?

Oh I love it that people are doing it! I think it helps with perspective in several ways.

In this image there is a bit of a challenge with the skin, there are dusky patches on her lower face and she has a very faded but large birthmark on her forehead, so improving those issues without too much softening could be tricky, where do we draw the line? When she would cry and start to melt down like all toddlers do at some point her birthmark gets much darker. In fact I forgot all about it, since it had been ages since I last took her photo, until we had been at work for an hour and it began to redden.

    1. When people are doing any c&c, there are always variables..monitors, personal tastes, monitors, lol.

    2. This gives a base to refer to.

    3. I always wonder if the suggestions of a commenter would improve it when started from sooc image.

I can't wait to see more. I am glad I decided to post mine later, keeps the pool clean !

This original image is too yellow, and a bit small to edit color well.

It is tempting to white balance of the white dress, but I suspect it is not really white, but a very, very light blue. I get more satisfactory results by white balancing off the small end of her mobile phone which I am pretty sure is a real black. When I use that the skin tones begin to look better in RGB numbers and LAB numbers - in LAB a and b are both positive, and b>a on the back of her hand.

The background is grey that varies from yellow to blue tinged on my screen due to the mixed lighting at the time of exposure.

The B&W renderings above look pretty nice to my eye.

This is a bit like doing a cover or a remix!:D

Lots to like about the original. I kept pretty close to it. Used exposure adjustments, levels, curves, sharpening, cloning.

Thanks for this. Here's my attempt. It would obviously be better with the original file to work on.

Could you upload to smugmug? I tried a PSD file, but that was not accepted. Maybe raw-files are? Raw is best: more info in the file and the whitebalance in this jpg seems to be off.

You could upload it to someplace like Dropbox - http://www.dropbox.com - to make is accessible to folks to download and edit. And yes, you can upload the RAW file.

You can't upload a RAW file to your smug account unless you have SmugVault - and that wouldn't be available to anyone but you. When I said you could upload the RAW file that was in the context of Dropbox, not smug.

Did you try Dropbox as I suggested above? You can upload any type of file there, and you can specify that a file be available to others.

well of course I did not, that would be sensible and following instructions Laughing.gif. I have used Dropbox before but I deleted the software and this thread is losing interest, but I will next time. Thanks !

This is a very nice result, Trudy. My reservations would be skin tone, and overall punch. To me, the girl's skin seems still a little yellow (how do magenta and yellow compare? They both should be under 30, and yellow only slightly more than magenta on average). And I think her figure needs to come slightly more forward out of the bg. The black top also seems to have lost highlights. But what I say is only gilding the lily, really.:D The girl's face has a nice natural look, which was the main point of the exercise, I think.
