So after 3 years, my gig in China ends tomorrow. I know that it isn't my last time in this immensely tapestried country but I won't know for a while when the next will begin. Here are are several random images from the last many weeks. I hope you've all enjoyed the images I've shared as much as I've enjoyed the chance to capture them. There's more in the library, so don't be surprise if I still share a few extra at some point. Happy holidays.

I appreciate your people shots best, especially #2 and #7 are my favorites IQ wise. The welder is a very well done ... but doesn't say "China" to me (not that every image has to say "China", but ... it would be nice). The Mao image is most telling of China's past and future. What brought you to China? Where were these images taken?

So much to absorb here Jenn,
They are all so very different from each other plus some black and white and color!
So I will comment in bits I think.
First what stood out was your drool worthy conversions in b&w bowdown.gif.
The welder shot is just jaw dropping. bowdown.gif
    The rooftop shot too!

I feel as though I am all over the place with my comments. So I will stop now until I can take my time and view them again.

Your China shots will be missed. I was a history major in Asian studies concentrating on Chinese history so I have truly appreciated your posts.

Just not enough bowdown.gif to go around.

I will so miss your China shots. They have been so outstanding and have told the story of the Shanghai community you ventured into so often.

You seem to have mastered the night shooting lighting/exposure/processing as demonstrated in #1.
#3, the welder, absolutely floors me! It is so incredibly well done. :jawdrop

And #10 is a well-done last shot and commentary on the country today.

Sidenotes: Who else would appreciate my stir-fried references and preferences?
Did you hear that Santa wasn't feeling well? He was heard to be saying "Bu Hau Hau Hau!" (translates better in Cantonese to "MMM Ho Ho Ho"...) :D
And Liz a Chinese Studies major? eek7.gif

Looking forward to more shots from China AND your new locale!

I''ll nod towards #2 and #6. #2 reminds me of what challenges others have in the world to simply survive. Your capture with the focus on the face reinforces that. #6 stands out to me as well in the juxtaposition between haves and have nots. Both supurb captures. thumb.gif

I've thoroughly enjoyed your series abroad, and look forward to viewing your next chapter in life.

Great set, Jenn. 2, 3, 9 and 10 especially appeal to me. Maybe it's just me, but something seems odd about #7, almost as if he's holding a mask to his face. I don't imagine that's true--and I really like the shot--but I wish I understood what's bugging me about it. The light? The cell phone? Did you dodge the face? Dunno.

So where are you going next? I've switched between Spain and the US a number of times in my life and every chapter is different. Makes for an interesting life, not to mention portfolio lol3.gif. Good luck with the next chapter. thumb.gif

My day job is as a consultant for healthcare and life sciences and I've been working with businesses and government around the healthcare reforms in China.

This set was taken in and around Shanghai. I've been exploring the communities in a ring about 25-40km outside of the city proper. I've known of that Mao stencil for a long while. It was hidden in one of the blocks in my old neighbourhood that's been being slowly torn down. It just so happened that they final got serious about the demolition a couple of days before I flew out.

You'll notice that it's alternating colour and B&W. Don't tell anyone, but it's also a mix of different cameras and digital and film as well. I'm sneaky that way...

I'm going to miss Hefei Lu. It's such a great street to walk down any season, any time of the day or night. As to the references and preferences, it turns out that the uncle of my estate agent / friend in Shanghai owns a well known restaurant in Melbourne's Chinatown. Oh, not much Cantonese spoken around my parts, Shanghai Hua or Mandarin.

I didn't dodge the face, but it was some interesting light. I think what you're seeing is the hard angular nature of the phone across his jaw. It somehow distorts the normal facial lines. I would have preferred if the phone were slightly separated from the face, but oh well.

The next place is a really open question. It could literally be almost anywhere. But I'll be hanging out in Melbourne for the short term. Expect to see shots from NZ and AU for the next couple of months.

Yep, all my local friends there are absolutely convinced that I will come back. Despite a lack of language and through my images they've decided that China is my home. China will definitely remain one of my homes.

China totally does that to you. It will always be a second home in my heart. When I was living there I went to Maui for the Winter Holiday. When I arrived back in Shanghai, I was like, ahhhhhh, home.
