Ok, I go to my other computer, and both galleries are showing 3 thumbnails wide. Why would it be so much different on this one?
Stretchy gallery styles are dynamically sized according to the size of your browse window. Bigger window means larger main image and more thumbs. Smaller window means smaller main image and fewer thumbs. Try it on any computer. Just drag the corner of the browser window and make it smaller or larger, let go and you will see Smugmug layout things out to fit with an appropriate size for the window and no horizontal scrolling.
Ok, but why would some galleries on the same monitor show different sizes?
Different customizations and/or themes use a different amount of space. Different font sizes take different amount of space. Different gallery descriptions take a different amount of space. The two galleries you linked above have different themes, fonts, gallery descriptions, etc... They both show the same number of thumbs in my particular browser window size, but I'm sure there is some size where they would show differently because of the different format they have.

Here is one with 6, at least on my monitor

And this one has 5

Which of course the main image will be much larger on the 5 thumbnail than the 6.
