Pricing Downloads?

My background is in selling unique fine art, I am new to selling my own photography online. I have no idea of an average price for a downloaded image.

I presumed that downloading a full file for commercial purposes should cost the same as comparable piece of commissioned art, but I don't know.

Can someone give me some numbers? Please?

My highest price was $5000 for the full sized commercial download, is that way out or in the ball park?

That all depends on who your target customer is, no?

I have never sold a download, so I don't know the market. I know the market for living mid-career painters, but I don't know what an advertiser would pay to use one of my shots to sell their product. It is the commercial use that I am a little hazy on. There must be a standard.

I have never sold a download, but a couple years back I found a few tips in the Photographer's Market book-published annually. Essentially it suggested that you check the publication rates paid for the type of image you are offering. I know these prices can be all over the map, but if you check a publication that you would offer a print to, then you at least have a starting point.

The other direction is to check out what microstock houses charge. Of course these will be very low, but again, it gives you an idea of there to position yourself.

    Good luck!

But do you have any idea of the market you are targetting? In other words, who are you trying to sell photos to, and for what do you expect them to use your photos for?
