THM Files?

OK, I googled them and read what they are. I discovered them after playing with an old Canon 10D today. They're alongside my RAWs. It's pretty cool, actually: change their extension to .JPG and you get a JPG preview of the RAW. OK, so my question is... why did Canon put these here? My guess would be for the playback on the camera's LCD... but can't the camera read and display RAWs on the LCD? And, the 10D--with the .CRW file extension on RAWs--has these thm files, but the 1D2--with the CR2 extension--doesn't. :scratch

RAW files can not be displayed. All the previews you see ether on the camera's LCD or your computer monitor are small .jpg's and are only a representation of what the RAW file could look like when converted.
