The Last Kodachrome. An exhibition.

By noon, December 30th, the last rolls of Kodachrome will be at Dwayne's Photo in Kansas for processing. After they're done, so too is their development of Kodachrome.

21 photographers will show 45 prints at Rayko Photo Center in SF. The exhibition runs from January 4th through 21st. If you're in the area, stop on by.

It's sad that a company resorts to lawsuits. Especially when it's not even a competitor in that market space.

I can't quite figure out what these lawsuits are about... something about images that are stored online... the article was very vague.

I've been fairly absent from these forums this past week, not due to the holidays as you might think, but due instead to shaking my house upside down to be sure the last rolls of Kodachrome fall out! I found 10 rolls altogether, but in 3 different places. The last one went off to Kansas by its lonesome, and surely cost more than it's worth. But I have no idea what's on any of them, so off they went... UPS, USPS, etc. I didn't find anymore tonight in my last shakedown ( ! ), which is fortunate. Oh my. It is sad. That film was my constant travel companion to all corners of the earth. The best tip someone ever gave me was to try Kodachrome 25 in Venice at night. He handed me 3 rolls of it, and it was an amazing experience. I ended up using all speeds; 64 the most of course. Well, I called Dwayne's with a question & they sounded completely nuts out there. The lab has got to be a real zoo this week. What I wonder is, where will their machine(s) go? It'll be fun to get my photos back; Christmas-after-the-fact, perhaps! Oh, and the things I found in this process of shaking the house: Wow!! Tonight I got a little sidetracked reading old letters home from our 2 yrs. in China! Odd, how looking for Kodachrome kinda brought me full-circle to letters from the very place I shot more of it than anywhere else.

It looks to be a desperate attempt to curtail growth or get in on the action within a sector they lag far behind.

Kodak does have a consumer photo gallery but it is not nearly as popular as most mainstream sites. What I think it lacks is the social simplicity flickr or google has.

It's interesting that so many media outlets caught the story. The local radio station even gave away concert tickets to the contestant who correctly guessed the end of Kodachrome.

My oh my. I wish I could have been there to see the craziness pouring into Parsons, KS this past month. I'll bet the local Fedex, UPS & USPS people had the most humongous volume of mail they'd ever seen. Of course, the one thing that caught my attention in the article & rankled me wasn't even Kodachrome-related: "... the retirement of it's KodaChrome film..." (boldened by me). This improper use of "it's" happened twice in the article. Good grammar is retiring along with Kodachrome.... drives me right up a wall. A word to the wise: If you're using the word "it's", read it in your sentence as "it is". If it makes sense, you're ok. If it doesn't, then get rid of the apostrophe, for heaven's sakes!! I'm confused-- what did you mean is the desperate attempt to curtail growth or get in on the action? I wasn't sure if you were referring to Kodak's moves in retiring Kodachrome or what. As much as I lament the retirement of Kodachrome, I also don't see (after reading a lot more about the process, chemicals, labor-intensity, and equipment needed) how it could have been propped up indefinitely. I don't think those machines can be kept around for a long time with sparse usage, and there was really no way to encourage large-scale usage of such a film anymore. The process was highly specialized in its nature, taking up large amounts of space, dedicated technicians and some chemicals that Kodak can't keep making forever. In fact, eventually they'd probably be breaking environmental laws in order to make them. I say all this with great respect and sadness-- but I'm starting to get to the point of just being very glad for what Kodachrome captured for me for so many years, all in thanks to my grandpa who taught me about it. He did aerial photography and was using materials way-back-when that no one in his area even thought to use for such a thing, including Kodachrome. And yes, those slides are still good.... amazing, really.

Ha ha - this also drives me crazy, and is prevalent everywhere, not only on the word its - it seems people are determined to add that apostrophe to every word that ends in the letter s. My other pet peeve is the disagreement between a singular subject and the plural possessive, their. Though some claim the rule has changed on this one to factor in PC-ness.

Anyway, don't get me going on this...rofl

There are five patents that Kodak alleges Shutterfly has violated. In turn, Shutterfly has filed a counter suit claiming Kodak is violating seven of theirs. Kodak has also filed suit against RIM and APPL for how these phone makers display images on their devices. You can read more here.

Substitute batteries, compact florescent lightbulbs or solar panels for semiconductors. Green isn't always what you think.
