Snowday 12/27/10

Love the snowdays and an extra day off from work.
If anyone got hit by that blizard you know the damage it did. Here in Queens we got abuot 19 inches. The snowplows never hit the sidestreets--mass transit came to a standstill, no work, no school and so we hit the outdoors:)
First two are family--the last two are people on the street.

All taken with my 50mm which is weather sealed:)

The line is great in #2 and the front/back contrast in #3 is working for me.

What's all that white stuff? :D

I like the last one simply for the clarity of the shot. Looks like a beautiful aftermath of what I can only imagine as being a royal pain and your subjects seem to be taking it in stride.

The first one reminds me of being a little kid in Chicago. I loved playing in the snow. But the older I got, the less I loved it lol3.gif. Thanks for the memories.

For Richard, a little ditty penned by my dear late mother, Alison Boylston Piazza:

    Sign of Age

If you're not thrilled at the news that it's snowing,
Don't look now - your years are growing.

We mostly got wind, sleet, and slush here on the island, but I do know NYC and Boston got slammed with the white stuff. I'll have to confess - I love snow.

Thanks for the glimpses of Queens (my father's homeland).

Ah, if only that were the only problem...at least I can avoid snow. rolleyes1.gif

This may seem like a copout, but....

    I like all of them.

#1. I love the joy on the little girl's face as she's being pulled on the sled. Great action shot, too, freezing the puller mid stride like that. Since you said family, I'm going to guess your daughter is on the sled.
#2. I like the contrast in people. The young boy seems to be enjoying himself, but the people walking in a line seems to be a downer, like they've been walking for a long time and are tired.
#3. The man with the shovel is really good. Add in the flying snow and what I get is a man saying "Cripes. Again?"
#4. They seem to be having some fun. And are they dragging luggage??? That's gotta be a chore dragging it through the snow like that. Cool contrast with their smiles and the laboring shoveler in the background and the man who is bending down...maybe trying to get unstuck?

And on all 4, great job on keeping the snow white without blowing out the details!

If you back me into a corner and threaten to give me a facewash, I'd have to say my favorite is between #1.

Thank you Damon. I liked the way the line of people came out too.

I'm with you on this, though my kids' joy is pretty contagious--the only part I don't really enjoy is putting on the layers of clothes and worse, taking the wet layers off and drying everything on radiators :D.

    Nyarthlopic,
    1. That's my girl:) she's 3 yo and it was her first time sledding--we were out in it for almost 3 to 4 hours between shoveling and sledding and she did not want to go back inside.

    2. That's my son with his aunt pulling him, but the people infront of her are doing just as you said, walking walking walking, it was the only mode of transportation and everyone tried to stick to a path that was already there.

    3. I think the man with the shovel was glad for the snow, he was there asking people if they needed help digging out and was making a little extra money. Mayor Blumberg completely ignored Queens and other outter boroughs, so we had to rely on our own shoveling, the kindness of strangers and entrepreneurs such as this man. We have yet to dig out, our street is totally blocked with snow, not even a snowplow can get by now it's so packed in. I hope no one has an emergency because there is no way emergency services can get by.

    4.
I think they were coming back from the airport and they came back by train and then were walking the rest of the way. (some trains were working, some were not, some trains worked until they didn't which stranded some people for over 11 hours, some people were stranded on the roads and highways for 18 hours!)
They were in exceptionally good spirits for being stranded and dragging heavy luggage.

I'm glad all my images worked for you--thank you.

I like all three, but the guy lighting his cigarette in the swirling snow really does it for me.clap.gif

    Thanks B.D.
It's better than that I think.
    It's a lollipop :D.

When I shot it, I thought the same thing, but hard to tell because the wind had just kicked up. Then I saw him pull it out later. Kind of made my day.

We never get snow in the cities on the left coast. I like the dynamic feel and framing of #1. #3 is so well done -- I thought he was lighting his cigarette...ne_nau.gif

Great great shots Liz. I'm with bd on the guy with the ciggie.

We got slammed in early Dec. with 36 to 60in of the stuff. Transit was down 3 days, highways closed with 200+ people rescued by helicopters etc. Don't you love winter? These kids certainly do!

I watched the news when that happened. I was so jealous! I love the second picture with the people in a line like that, very cool. Great pictures!

Thank you guys---It was an interesting experience to shoot in these conditions and not blow out the whites!.

Also Patti, it was a a lollipop, makes it that much more fun to me.

Moose135--Forget the snowplows--mother nature beat the sanitation dept to it. However, I am still waiting for sanitation to pick up the trash.
It's been 11 days since they have picked up. Can you imagine all the Christmas trash from the food to the giftwrap and boxes plus New years and everything in between and no pick-up. Well the squirrels and racoons are having a field day let me tell you.
I've tried to keep as much recycling and trash as I can inside, but I am running out of room!

    You did ask:)
