I've been studying the U.S. Army surveyors of the 1850s exploring the west. Some of the illustrations in the record of Lt Ives reminded me of this shot I took back in 2008 during a Colorado River geology field trip.

Anyway, I think it's a fine shot, different comp of a place not too many people know of, remote and relatively challenging to access. Shot before dawn on an overcast May day; f16, 30 seconds, 100 iso. The lighting is quite unusual for the desert, a place where the usual is quite unusual. Thanks for playing.

I've always had a bit if interest in geology, but don't know enough to really be able to appreciate the formations in the southwest. I'm sure there is a ton to see if you know what to look for. thumb.gif

Most of it I can sleep through standing up. I found this location after breaking away from the group with car trouble. Later, after fixing the problem, I tried catching up to where they said they were going to camp. I ended up on this ridge and this was the view (among others) I woke up to the next morning. I spent the day wandering and caught up with them late in the afternoon. Apparently they had a lousy night chasing tents, sleeping bags and food wrappers, in the wind. They couldn't find where they were supposed to camp either. I slept great. My wife doesn't let me take her fancy Jeep out too much. Once I figured out the seats recline, I slept like a baby.

What I got out of the trip was this; One time everything was flat, then it broke in half and both halves flipped over upside-down away from each other. While this was happening, water from the upper Colorado River and the Great Basin would build up making natural dams and then breaching them and flooding making another lake and dam downstream. So on, so forth. I think I slept through the good parts--Standing up.

Thank you. I'm going through my stuff looking especially for shots that will make square prints. I'm having them printed on tile.
