Happy New Year folks. Thought I would share some osprey flight shots. I hope to get up my last set of images from 2010 shortly as I had a pretty good morning on the 31st at an eagle's nest. :ivar:D Until I find the motivation to process the couple dozen images I hope these will tide you over.

Thanks for looking.

Wonderful as usual. I notice I am more focused on the talons, which are so prominent in the first 2 shots, ever since I saw them landing on Marina's head. Has Marina been back out with you recently? Have you even seen her? Just kidding, of course. That is one cool headed gal. Happy New Year!

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Isn't Marina your friend on whose head the young fledgling osprey landed--you posted the 3 photos on Harry's "favorite 2010 photos" thread? The gal who calmly stood there and had the presence of mind to tell you to get some shots? Right? I could be way off base, but that's what a recall! ne_nau.gif

Beautiful captures, Mike. Great exposures and they appear to have excellent details, which is a bit hard to see at these sizes. Personally, I'd ditch the wide white borders and use the space to display the birds larger so we can see more details. But that's just me, and there's no accounting for taste. mwink.gif

    Great Shots! + Question ...
Mike, thanks for sharing. Amazing images!!! I'm new to dgrin (2nd post) and am amazed at some of the talent on here.

Recently, I've started taking a liking to bird photography and was able to purchase a used 300mm f/4 (autofocus, non af-s). It's an awesome lens to have around.

I was wondering if you could share some of your techniques. Specifically, how do you meter to get such great color and exposure? Is it all natural light or do you use some fill? I just can't seem to get it right. If you don't mind sharing, I would love to hear some input!

Awesome Mike. My favorites are the Juvi's.

Thanks Maxis. Juvies are the coolest IMO. Those colorful eyes and that white feather pinstriping...very neat birds. Shame they have to grow up. thumb.gif

Thanks for the kind words and welcome to Dgrin (posting)

300mm should work fine for wildlife. I often use only a 200mm. Just have to talk sweet to the birds and if that doesn't work. Fresh fish. eek7.gifD

Yes..all natural light. No flash. Key to the exposure is the light. Sweeter the light..sweeter the shot . Early morning or late evening light. Shoot from sun up for a couple hours then head in and head out for the last couple hours of light. Makes a big difference.

Plenty of info online on exposure but I'm usually exposing for whites and let the rest fall wwhere it may. Blown highlights / whites doesn't do you any good. Your histogram is your friend. Look at it often and don't be afraid to waste a few shots on something to get a reading from a similar object as that which you want to shoot. IE. shoot something with white in it to check histogram (for blinking blown highlights ) and dial it back accordingly.

These new digital cameras with histogram really make shooting so much more easier. In the good old days of film....you really ahd to know your camera and guesstimate a lot. Sure is nice to see some feedback almost instantly.
