    I am not good at making offers, but would love to know what you have in mind for a price range?

    Well..........we all know how nice the lens is.....but what we don't know is:

    What are you asking for it?
    What are payment terms?
    What is Date code??
    What all comes with it??

    you know.....all the normal stuff in a "for sale" ad

    It's a beautiful lens. Everyone should have a 1.2 in their gear. Laughing.gif. I would like to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,750. But I will take another reasonable offer.

    It does not have a box...when I moved I somehow forgot my box. Not sure if even in the old house. Probably not.

    Payment terms are paypal. Not sure what the datecode is. It does have a case, and a little hood.

    That's about it. Let me know if you have any other questions. Of course I can take a picture of it with my iphone and forward it to you, or put it here.

    If you take the body cap off (lens end that attaches to body) around the opening through the lens, is a back material. On it
    you will find a white stamped "code". What we're looking for is the first two letters........something like......UV or UX, etc.

    By this code (specifically the second letter) one can tell the age of the lens.

    Really? It's a UX. What does that mean now?

    The first letter, "U", indicates that the lens was made in Canon's Utsunomiya, Japan factory. Prior to 1986, this letter is moved to the last position of the date code.

    U = Utsunomiya, Japan
    F = Fukushima, Japan
    O = Oita, Japan

    The second letter, "R", indicates the year the lens was manufactured.

    A = 1986, 1960
    B = 1987, 1961
    C = 1988, 1962
    D = 1989, 1963
    E = 1990, 1964
    F = 1991, 1965
    G = 1992, 1966
    H = 1993, 1967
    I = 1994, 1968
    J = 1995, 1969
    K = 1996, 1970
    L = 1997, 1971
    M = 1998, 1972
    N = 1999, 1973
    O = 2000, 1974
    P = 2001, 1975
    Q = 2002, 1976
    R = 2003, 1977
    S = 2004, 1978
    T = 2005, 1979
    U = 2006, 1980
    V = 2007, 1981
    W = 2008, 1982
    X = 2009, 1983
    Y = 2010, 1984
    Z = 2011, 1985

    The first two numbers, "09", is the month number the lens was manufactured in. For example, 02 represents February...11 represents November & so forth.

    The next two numbers, "02", are an internal Canon code.

    Interesting that the letters go back to A....in 2012....the end of the(and the beginning of a new) Mayan calendar.

    You raised questions with your listing. There are two versions of this lens with the latter being the one you are offering. More concise description would be Canon EF 85 1.2L II. There is quite a bit of difference in prices the two fetch on the used market.

    Edit: Yes this is withtout a question one of Canons best pieces of glass in the IQ dept. The only piece of glass I have that produces better images is the 200 2.0L but there is a huge price difference. Definitely in my "Wont sell even if hell freezes over" collection.

    I too have been learning from this thread. Can someone explain the difference between the EF 1.2L II & (I assume) I?

    The difference is an updated version. There is no "I" marked on first versions but any new releases in lenses are so marked II or even III. In the case of the 85L they made some changes to the AF system and an optical upgrade to reduce vignetting. Another upgrade over the original is it sends distance ino to the camera for use in flash calculation when using eTTL where the first version did not.
