...or, what you can do with Content-Aware Fill in PS CS5.

This was the original uncropped full frame shot.

Mike (Osprey Dude...or whatever he calls himself these days :D) might think this was a bit too tight...Sooooo.....enter CAF!

First I selected the crop tool with a 9 X 16 ratio. Then I expanded the borders of the crop past the image borders to create more room. I chose a really gaudy bright green for the BG to make it simple to see the borders.

I found that using the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select one side of the new canvas at a time to work better than selecting all of the new canvas to do a much better job. Make your selection on the BG layer (won't work on a copy) and hit delete. Accept CAF and hit OK in the dialogue box that pops up. Repeat for each border, remembering to overlap the edge of the original image...and like magic you have more space that matches the original image! You may have to do a little cloning and healing to make it perfect.

Almost scary how good it works.

Excellent capture and terrific job at editing, Ric. I'll have to try your procedure, as I have a couple candidates for it. :D

Great shot and interesting to see a practical use / result of CAF - even though, as you say, it needs work - especially the bottom L corner.

Btw, I still think you set the bar very high with the Sandill pic here :)

Very nice work Ric, and this is one thing that I use every now and than. Content Aware sure is a time saver most of the time. Good work.

Don't you love all the things you can do in CS5. Nice manipulation Ric. Definitely improved without the crowded house feeling.

I drove 2.5 hours and arrived at my destination 5 minutes before I got that shot just after sunrise. I jumped out of the SUV with my 40D just in time to get a dozen or so frames.

I had been busy with preparations for our youngest son's wedding...and just plain took time out to go. Glad I did.

Yeah...I didn't reference it in my reply to him.

    Thanks.:D

The 40D wasn't as fast or have as many MP but it had a cleaner image.

Nice work Ric. Adding canvas to an image has saved a number of my captures.

You can find a tutorial on adding canvas here.

CAF is either very good or not a viable option in my limited experience. You know that when you hit delete and you don't like the results, you can undo and hit delete again with varied results.

Taking winter before last and devoting it to learning PS was the best thing I could have done. I stubbornly resisted too long.

    Thanks, Mike. :D
