New to the site and hope to get a lot of advice and make some contributions... I took the above photo a few weeks ago, my granddaughter standing at the beginning of the dock and leery of the seagulls...

This would be a great shot, 1. without the stuff at the end of the pier; 2. most importantly, if the child's feet were not cut off; 3. if you had backed up far enough - maybe 6-8 feet - to show the child as a small person in a big world; 4. if the arms were outstretched somewhat, indicating a gesture; 5. if the child were looking to the side, or at the seagull, showing a glimpse of her face and indicating an interest/interaction with her environment.
To take a picture that goes beyond a snapshot takes lots of practice - don't give up, this is the beginning of a good idea.

While I agree with most of what Sara said, I think the exact same framing might have worked OK if you had a greater depth of field so that some of the gulls were in sharper focus. They get a little lost in the background blur, which undermines the point you were trying to capture.
I do think the legs chopped off is a shame. The shot really would have been nicer to have included them. The birds? What birds? As Richard said, more DOF would have done them justice.
Don't be discouraged at all. It's a great shot and if you stick around you WILL learn more which is what this is all about.
My thoughts? I like the concept, lighting and perspective.
I'll sign-off with ".... still cuts people of at the knees but getting better. now it's just the ankles".
.
I noticed... Thanks for the welcomes...
I knew that having the feet cut off was less than desirable, and really do welcome the other comments.
unbeleivable sometimes how b&w can really help out a shot.
Welcome to dgrin Eviltwin. I thought the shot had potential orginally, but I think the b&w really makes it work.
Is it me or does that one seagull on the left look psychotic?

Very nice.... Thanks you...
It is amazing what a difference B&W can make.
Thanks for the advice and input, it is appreciated...

i like your original better because you got down low on the shot and are at child level, this one is more like a snapshot.
