Just saw the new Mac App store opened and Aperture is now only $79 down from $199. I have been using LR3 for a while but may try Aperture for this price and learn it as well I wish this would put some pressure on Adobe for pricing, the APP store works through ITunes and you can re-download applications as well.

I’m an LR user but I love using Aperture for making books. I just export the images from LR in Adobe RGB (1998), bring them into an Aperture Library and use it just for making books. I still prefer LR for all the other tasks.

Well it doesn't work thru iTunes, but an important consideration is that apps in the Mac App store do not come with 'free upgrades', each new version is a new purchase, much the way it is in the iOS app store. That could be one of the considerations for the diff in pricing, but I don't own Aperature to know.

On the other hand, apps in the Mac App store are licensed for up to 5 Macs.

The apps are not thru iTunes but the app store Icon that pops up in your dock after you upgraded OSX to 10.6.6. The apps on my iPhone do upgrade for free after purchase. Major upgrades may be required to pay like iPhoto 11 from 09 or something like that. You did correctly state all the software can be run on all Macs using that the 5 iTunes license. There are no trial version either..

I suppose it depends on app and developer. Most of my iphone/ipad apps do not have free upgrades to the next version. For 'dot releases' they do, but things like Real Racing, I have to buy Real Racing 2. I suspect that this may be among the reasons that Aperture is cheaper, but just guessing. You can still buy Aperture in the Apple Store, online, for $199, and there seems to be no mention as to why the difference in price.

Here is a link to Smugin for Aperture, it has a free version and a paid version with more features. This works great with Aperture 3. mwink.gif

I use Aperture 3 (sadly purchased at full price) and upload to Smugmug, no problem, with the plugin. Have since I first got Aperture 2 a couple of years ago.

Sounds like a great deal - are you sure this is not the upgrade version?

I use Aperture 3 myself and love it.

Unreal isn't it? $79 is not an upgrade version. I'm not positive, but I think the $79 version is not eligible for cheap upgrades in the future.

Even if you have to buy the whole new version for $79...that is still cheaper than the upgrade price of $99 that I paid when I went from Aperture 2 to 3.

Just downloaded the plug in, looks to work great. Just two quick questions...

1- when I upload a photo to Flick (don't hate!), if I move or delete the photo from Aperture it removes it automatically from F****. Does it do the same on SmugMug, or once I've uploaded it the only way it disapears is through me deleting it on the site?

2- In Aperture, at the top you have the images for email, Facebook, Flickr etc- is there a way to get a SmugMug image up there as well?
