This is the first time shooting indoor on a basketball court. My daughter plays "Futsal". It is soccer on a basketball court with a low bounce soccer ball. I was using my Oly 510 with my f2.8 70-200 mm lens and my Promaster 7500 EDF. ISO at 800 with shutter speed around 125 to 180.
What do I need to make something like this a more quailty photo? Any suggestions would be helpful.

1. Daughter blocking a shot.

2. Who says a basketball court is only for basketball and volleyball?

Can you try without flash and move to ISO 3200?

I'd drop the flash and push the ISO, unless the lighting is so poor that this is not possible. I shoot indoor soccer (soccer in a hockey arena, in which the ball can be bounced off the sides) at the U14 level, under very difficult light--dim, variable, and narrow spectrum. I typically shoot at ISO 3200-5000, around 1/640 at f2.8 (also use a 70-200/2.8) and get pretty good results with de-noising and color adjusting

Here's an example (one of the better ones, I'll admit...)

I wish my Oly would go up to ISO 3200, but the max is 1600, and with a flash, I can not get a fast shutter speed.

Nice shot. Maybe it's time to upgrade on the camera equipment.

Well, sometimes there is only so much you can do with limited ISO and available light. I guess it is just a question of how badly you want those pix, and how much you're willing to pay to get them.

But for flash pix, those came out pretty good!

You hit the nail on the head. I guess the question is, what setup do you use to shoot your indoor soccer ?

I shoot with a Canon 5D mkII and a 70-200/2.8. I have on occasion used a 50/1.2 as well, with good results on the exposure but limited reach.

The next thing I'd do in your circumstance is bounce the flash off the ceiling rather than direct flash. SS at max x-sync speed, ISO 1600, f/2.8, Manual mode. Probably need to set FEC at anywhere from +1 to +2 1/3. Take a test shot or two to dial that in.

That technique worked reasonably well for me shooting indoor basketball on my 40D before I got a body with better high-ISO performance.

Bounce flash looks much better than direct. It's likely you won't be able to overpower ambient with a single bounce flash in a gym, so you may get a little ghosting. You should also set your camera to use 2nd curtain sync.

One other thing that will help is if you gel the flash to match the color of the lights. Avoid the mixed color light sources as much as possible.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. The thing I am going to try is to take the flash off the camera itself. The Promaster 7500 EDF can be used as a remote flash as well. So hopefully this will help things out. You never know till you try.
