The colors in the first and the crop look somewhat muted to me (but I'm still not confident in my calibration on my new moniter so take that with a grain of salt!), how does it look in black & white?

I actually took this same shot the day before...talk about muted colors - it was a very boring gray sky! This was heavenly in comparison but I agree the color in the sky is a bit muted. Couldn't do much more to the sky without affecting the red light on the lighthouse.
I wish I had the same sky here as in the pano. That shot was taken as I drove away from Little Harbor and saw the sky 'on fire' before me. Drove fast to the lighthouse and shot back towards town. Got there just in time as the colors were fading fast.
