I want to buy an FX lens for my D700. the 70 - 200 F 2.8 @ approx $2100 seems to be the sports/action lens of choice but they also make a lens that is 80 - 200 that is not VR for about $1100.

the guy at B&H said the 2 lens are both the same type of heavy duty construction the only difference is one is not VR. but for the next few months I'll be shooting indoors and want a "fast" lens but not so long and I want it to be the same heavy duty construction as the 2 lens listed above for when i do venture back outdoors to the motocross tracks I primarily shoot.

is there any designation of Nikon len's that will get me the heavy type construction I want? any lens suggestions appreciated.

I don't know of a specific "designation" but in general, the F2.8 zooms are pro grade lenses with great construction. I own the 70-200mmVR. You won't be disappointed with the sharpness and construction of this lens. I rarely use the VR. It's a waste for sports and will not be helpful in your motocross photos. I suspect you would be very happy with the 80-200mm for your action shots if you don't need the VR for other applications.

going out on the proverbial limb here.....you might want to look at Sigma's 2.8 70-200....their vr (OS) is quite qabit less expensive than the Nikon...I have no experience with the VR version but do own and use the older (much older) 70-210 f2.8......I shoot wildlife and wedding and portraits with it.....I have not had any reason to squawk about Sigma for the last 25+ yrs of using them.

It can save you some money in the long run and they are much lighter than the Nikon's..............

The 80-200 AF-D is an awesome piece of glass for the money.

ken rockwell has a pretty good write up on the different models from over the years.
