I was fortunate enough to witness Palio Di Siena this past August

Siena’s Palio is a bareback horse race, held twice each year on July 2nd and August 16th. The Piazza del Campo, Siena's main square, is filled with dirt and the race highlights the week of trial runs, feasts, parades and ceremony.

Here are a few shots from the events in the Piazza.

The link to gallery is here http://billmanolakos.smugmug.com/Events/Palio-Di-Siena-August-10-2010/14077240_izchR Warning, the gallery was done for family and friends so it is 111 photos. Page 4 does have some interest for people watchers. The crowd in the stands do have an angry reaction to a jockey's actions, then when the race starts many of them show a great deal of excitement

Nice photos, well done. You had a good position for watching the race. I always watch both palios on TV.

Interesting, really like the 6th shot.

nothing quite like seeing the Palio live eh - it's an incredible experience and boy does the emotion run high!
we just visited Siena again last October - the Campo seems sooo quiet without the crowds of the race...
    thanks for sharing :D

I've been dreaming about going to Italy some day and just finished reading a travel essay about the Palio a couple of days ago...so wonderful to find pictures here! Great shots!

Do you have any photos of Siena in general that you'd be willing to share? (If these are already posted, please excuse me!)

    Thank you Everyone,

Stueve, I haven't posted that many shots of Siena but here a few of the Duomo. It is a must to see, especially the library, due to art work from many of great renaissance masters. Here are the few that I have.
