SB-900 problems?

Hello all,
I couldn't figure out where to post this, so please redirect if needed...
I have been encountering a problem for the last few months, and don't know WHAT is going on, but I am inclined to think a connection.
My SB-900 hotshoe flash is partnered w/ my D700 body.
Sometimes it works flawlessly but others it goes into "spastic" mode.
By spastic, I mean, it randomly fires, or goes into nuclear mode where is just flashes off about 10 times in rapid succession- like a machine gun burst.
Occasionally it will switch modes (I usually shoot w/ it on TTL-BL for some fill flash) where it switches to A/iso100 like it does if the camera isn't on.
I think its a problem w/ the foot connection?
Just curious before I send it to Nikon for repairs...has anyone had this problem w/ the SB-900?

Are the connections on the flash and camera clean? That would be the first thing I'd check. Other than that, I have no idea.

Does this happen in portrait orientation?

I had the same problem last year. I the D700 to Nikon and they replaced the hot shoe. Appearently it's a known problem (defect?). No issues ever since then. It was under warranty, so there was no charge to fix it.
