This was just a short afternoon outing last weekend, and leaving home at 2 p.m. we were late for any serious hiking, but I was hoping to at least get some fresh air and nice pictures.

1. The first part of our short walk was up a grassy slope with Mt. Krvavec in the background.

2. It was warm - too warm for mid-January!

3. At the top of Mt. Kriska planina, the T-bar lifts waited patiently for some snow. This is supposed to be the high season for skiing! I want snow!

4. Views were a bit hazy but you could make out Kamnik, my hometown in the valley below.

5. Layers of hills, one of my favorite landscapes.

6. A chapel on another hill.

7. Soon the light started to turn warm yellow and orange.

8. We headed back towards our car.

9. Orange mists reaching out of the Ljubljana Basin all the way to the mountains.

10. A lone skydiver and Mt. Triglav in the background.

11. Fiery sky above the pistes of another ski resort.

12. We waited for the sun to finally disappear behind the horizon, but as it is usually the case, the show was just beginning. First, everything was calm...

13. ... and then the sky exploded into crazy pink and red colors.

14. And I didn't have my tripod with me!
K30-Kriska-172-Hpm.jpg

15. Of course, it only lasted six minutes. Then the colors started to fade just as quickly as they appeared.

I was lucky! How many times have I waited for the sunset, equipped with everything from a tripod and a remote control to warm clothes and snacks, but ended up with a sorry excuse for a sunset or no sunset at all? :D

5 & 7 are extraordinary! I like the layers and colors. I like 8 too; the warm rich colors on the snow is beautiful. What a beautiful place too. Very nice; you are fortunate.

Wow they all look great, to hard to pick a favorite. I can't imagine that chapel in #6 gets much business!

Wow Ana, nice views! How long is that hike? You say the chapel is only 1 mile but you look to be much higher than that.

I can practically smell the fresh air from here....

Oh, Ana, what a stunning set of images! I agree that 5, 7 and 8 are the best of the bunch--and #5 should be a magazine cover! Or the ad for a gallery exhibit . . .

Thank you for including your narratives also--I feel like I learned about a part of the world I have never seen and I can imagine a bit of your village life. Wonderful!

Steph, it takes one hour from the valley to reach the chapel in #6, a nice hike through the woods, and the views from there are wonderful... that's why it's so popular.
My hike from this post took about 1.5 hours both ways, and yes, it's much higher than the chapel. Ahhh, yes, the air was fresh indeed... :D

Beautiful set, once again Ana. Here in New England we'd happily ship you some of our snowstorms. We've had over 65-70cm of snow in the last week with more expected in the new few days. Is the chapel in #6 the same one you had that beautiful image from a couple of years ago?
