A Few Frames of Cincinnati with USAir

I had a meeting this weekend in Cincinnati. I had pm'd USAir a while back when I made the reservations and asked him if we could shoot some together and he agreed to meet me and accompany me. I have enjoyed seeing his night shots of Cincinnati and his barn shots here on dgrin, so I was pretty sure we had some common interests in subject matter.
We got together late Friday afternoon and did a little shooting together, and then had dinner at the Mike Fink, a floating restaraunt on the Ohio River. USAir is a great guy, and I enjoyed his company and help in learning my way around Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is a neat old river town - an architecturally interesting city settled by a large number of German immigrants. The original major bridge across the Ohio there was built in 1865 by John Roebling. It may look familiar to New Yorkers as it was the model for the Brooklyn Bridge later built by John Roebling.
I stayed in the Netherland Hilton downtown because that is where the meeting was being held, but it was a found treasure. The Netherland Hilton was built in 1930 in a very cosmopolitan Art-Deco style. It is the tallest building in Cincinnati and has an observation deck on the 49th story that is open to the public. I know that doesn't sound that impressive to New Yorkers, but many midwestern cities do not have nice open public access to the top of their highest buildings. So I took advantage of that to shoot a few frames
You can see how much higher I was than the surrounding buildings.
I remember the challenge based on "Reflections" and took advantage of a few from the roof top.
Many cities on the Ohio- Kentucky borders of the Ohio River have levees that are painted with murals - this is one frame that caught my eye...
The food at the Mike Fink was tasty but not photogenic I am afraid - blackened Mahi Mahi. The beer was good though. I want to thank USAir for his help and companionship - a great guy. I am looking forward to see some of his images from this weekend too.
As always I am interested to hear criticism and suggestions for improvement, either in shooting or post processing.:thumb

One of the nice things about Cincinnati geographically, is that east of the downtown area is Mt Adams - A steep little hill that lets you shoot the downtown buildings from straight on, not up - like this shot of the Proctor and Gamble complex, which is the two towers in the foreground.

I really like your shots of Cincinnati. I've been there twice this year and never knew the observatory deck even existed. I'll have to check it out on my next trip.
Another area you might want to try for Cincinnati skyline shots is on the KY side of the Ohio River called Devou Park. If you are looking for great dusk/night shots it's a great place to go. One warning, the park technically closes just after dusk so you are limited to the amount of night shots you can get off.

I almost missed this one
Great shots Jim
Love the reflections
And the one from the top of the Carew Tower
It was great to meet Pathfinder very nice guy
We had a great time...just wish we had more time to shoot
And wish the city would have left some of the lights on(church and bridge)
I should have just left my camera at home and just followed him around
You could learn a lot from him.
Hope to meet up again
Hey AJ come on down and well shoot Cincy
Thanks

I lived in the Cincinnati area as an undergrad (in Oxford to the north, but I spent a lot of time in Cincy) and then in Cincinnati proper for a year afterwards. But did I know about the observation deck in the Hilton? Not a chance.
Nice shots, by the way.
Very nice view from up there

Just found this post.
Let's do it! I PMed you so let's work on details and plan this sometime. :

Thanks 'gus, I did not use a star filter - this series was shot with a 24-70f2.8 L and it was a pretty sticky, humid night. Most of my shots that evening seemed to have this effect - maybe it is a feature of the lens at f 10.0 :
I do have a star filter, but I think the only frame I have used it for was this wedding shot.

Here is another shot from the Observation platform at the Carew Tower - the building I shot was the parking garage where I parked - It is 7 stories tall.
