I am trying to set up my email (eric@ericgerrard.com) I am using smugmug to host my domain name but when I try and do everything through gmail it will let me send but not receive mail. Have you guys ever heard of this problem? I think it has something to do with my mx records. I don't know much about this but when I ask it to "verify destination of your domains mx records" on gmails site it tells me this: An error occurred: Couldn't resolve DNS server name/IP [a0c.akamaiedge.net][11004]. and then it says "OTE: One or more CNAMEs were encountered. ericgerrard.com is really e1021.c.akamaiedge.net. [ericgerrard.com->domains.smugmug.com->domains.smugmug.com.edgekey.net->e1021.c.akamaiedge.net]" Do you guys have any idea what that e.1021.c.akamaiedge.net is? because I think that might be screwing this up. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Thanks! I tried emailing him, I will see what happens. But the record I need to verify is the mx record I believe. I think its some problem with who I own the domain through and google but I'm not sure. I do everything google says to do for my specific domain company (namecheap.com) and it still doesn't work. This is the page that gmail sent me to to troubleshoot my problem: http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=33313
Thanks again.

Monroe,
Email setup is between you and your domain provider. 1and1 is not supported for this very issue. We require the industry standard "CNAME" for your domain to work. But, 1and1 is unique in that if you setup a CNAME and A record the email stops working. They may have a work around but I have not found it. This information was verified by a tech at 1and1 a while back and led to our decision to not support domains from them any longer.

Again, that is between the customer and the domain host. I personally do that with my domains from GoDaddy. I have it setup so that the emails go to my GoDaddy email account and I simply retrieve them using the Gmail SMTP connection. The problem is that 1and1 seems to disconnect the email completely once the CNAME and A records are set. Not our issue.

Granted, it's not a recommended host, but for those that are already stuck, it may just be worth it to pay for the functionality.
