Is this decent?

Not really sure that this is challenge worthy.

I've entered the challenge, too, and found it difficult to think of something this time around.
In the end, I have something similar in a way, to this.
If this was mine I would consider the same but without the cutlery - it's a little bit of a distraction. I also think the entire picture is not...erm...thinking of the right word...rich enough? You know what I mean? A little too bright for what is, to me, a darker richer subject, the chocolate cake.

I am by no means an expert, and as I said, I have enetered something but I don't think it's quite the best, but it'll hold my place until I find another idea.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, this was taken in a hotel buffet. I didn't have the option to re-arrange anything. :-) The 'chocolate cake' is actually hazelnut fudge, but your points are all valid. I agree that the plate and chocolate swirls (not cutlery) are a bit distracting, that is why I used a post-process vignette. I might play around with it a bit more, but I am not sure what I can do to really dramatically improve it.

I like the texture, color & DOF. Can't decide if I like the first or second one better! Kinda looks like it might need straightened a little - is it leaning to the left? Also, some people aren't thrilled with vignetting, but I think it really works here with the DOF & pattern.

This is what I started with. I was shooting in public and didn't have my zoom lens with me. (Yay Lightroom!)
