I bought Bower SFD728 for a friend who's just his flash photography.
Since the flash has no controls, he won't be scared by all the features and will only learn bouncing and then diffusers. There is also 2nd curtain sync and FEC to learn with this flash. The flash fully automatic (TTL), no manual.
I've posted a detailed review: Bower SFD728 digital flash

I think it's a really easy and inexpensive way to start. What do you guys think?

The review seems pretty solid. I presonally don't have any experience with the product, but I'd probably give it a shot for $60. If it does end up living up to the hype of the review, you could realistically have 3 flashes for the price of one SB600.

well, don't forget, it has no manual power controls and no remote functions. so, you can really use it off-camera.

If it is totally auto...how do you use it off camera without TTl cables?? I hate being tied to my flash units with cables........and why did they put a flash foot in the kit with it?????

The foot/stand is not included, and you're right there is no way to use it off camera rather than TTL cables. That's why it's cheap :D

You could always go with a wireless trigger setup. I'm using a cheap version with my Sunpak and Nikon flash and have had next to no issues. However, if TTL was a requirement, maybe a used SB 24 to 26 series flash would be an option.

Well, not really. This flash cannot do manual (there is not power setting).
