Newbie help with domain name

Hi all, I am just doing the trial thing but will probably go with the power option.
How ever I am somewhat confused over the domain name bit. I need a name with .com.au ( Australia) and have found various prices on the actual domain name......but do I need hosting with it?
I already have a domain name and hosting but I don't want to use it......its been a disaster from whoa to go.
Thats where SM comes in
So what exactly do I need for SM?

If you want a custom URL then you need a domain name. You do not need hosting if your intent is to use the URL solely for smugmug.
