I wanted this picture to look pretty much like it does, but i didn't want it to be so grainy. I don't really know how to do a picture like this so i did it the only way i could think of. I put the girl in a dark room and had my friend stand on a chair with a flashlight. What should i have done.

To reduce noise you might want to try Noise Ninja or Neat Image.

I see what you're trying to do. Your image has potential. For lighting, you might want to experiment with different light sources. You don't have to get fancy with lighting. For example for this photo:
this was the only lighting I used.
Keep experimenting. I'd love to see what you come up with.
