Hey guys,
I'm looking for a compact monopod. What I mean by compact is a length of about 15" closed. I'm open to what type of materials it's made of. My only other requirement is that it be of good quality. I don't want a cheap piece of gear.

Thanks
R.

I use the Giottos P-pod...but it is around 23" collapsed, it also hold upto 33lbs, so it is a heavy duty monopod, but it back packs nicely and also fits in my suitcases or duffles with ease.....it is alum. and is one of the most versatile monopods made....good luck

here is a link showing some of its uniqueness ....http://tinyurl.com/46czcfd

If you can go 5 more inches, the Manfrotto 680 is a nice compact monopod for less than $60 new. I have one, it's 20" long collapsed. It is very nice quality, sturdy with a foam grip and rubber tip. Made out of aluminum and isn't too heavy (couple of pounds I would guess). Makes a good walking stick when I'm lazy.

I use the Manfrotto 695cx. It is about 18 inches, holds the D3 and Bigma without any issues and is incredibly light.

I use a Gitzo GM2561T Traveler - carbon fiber, 14.2 inches closed (but that's without a head attached).

thanks for the reply guys. I'll take a look at some of these.

I came across the manfrotto 680B during my internet search and that's about as small as I could find, which was a bit longer than what I wanted (closed).

I just had a quick look at the Gitzo GM2561T and the 14.5" might be about perfect.

    Again thanks guys

I think the Gitzo GM2561T is exactly what I'm looking for. I just need to warm up to the price, but knowing me it's only a matter of time before I push the shutter button. (get it push the shutter button....) Laughing.gif!!!! Ok I'm done cracking myself up.

I use a velbon UP-4000 (the UP-400 at Adorama looks very similar) and a Manfrotto 3229 head... it's about 2 feet lengthwise, but it's easy to carry... the setup cost me 55 bucks.

I have one more question for you guys on the Gitzo GM2561T, how stable is it? I'm llooking at the bottom section and it looks a bit thin.

It feels quite stable - even with the bottom piece extended.

You're right, it is pricey. I think it was worth it though.

You need a head: this one. I have it (they changed the name of it to 234RC) and love it.

I have a quick disconnect head that I can use on the monopod. It's small and i thing will work well.
