Sitemap File Size Error

Hi guys, I'm new to google's webmaster tools and want to make sure my site is getting properly indexed for SEO purposes. Apparently I'm getting red X's for all my gallery XML files (Sitemap exceeds maximum file size limit). And I don't see any XML file for images, as others seem to have.

Also, my Robots.txt is giving Google the 503 (Service unavailable) error, although from other posts this seems to be a problem that will be fixed on its own?

It could be coincidence, but one of my top keyword phrases "santa cruz wedding photographers" tanked in the rankings. I don't know if this is a separate issue from the sitemap/robots.txt problem or if I am getting punished by google for overzealous keywords :)

Thanks for reporting this. I'll pass your issue regarding the sitemap filesize on.
You can ignore the robots.txt error as this should be just a temporar one and Google should get the file again upon its next crawl.

EDIT: I just was made aware of that you also wrote in to the helpdesk. It's a reported issue and I hope it'll get fixed soon.

    GoodEye,

Sorry about this - its on my plate to get done and it is taking longer then I was anticipating.

I am looking at it though. Hopefully this week, next week at the latest.

Four months have passed - absolutely nothing has changed. Only:

"This week, next week at the latest ... This week, next week at the latest ..." [: repeat :]

    Cman,

I haven't been working at SmugMug for 4 months. I haven't said anything like that to you. My comment was not to you. It was a sincere apology to GoodEye and to provide a status update. The original post was on Jan 27th. That is about 3 weeks ago, not 4 months.

Are you having this same problem? If so, which sitemap file Google is complaining about being too large?

    Hi GoodEye,

When you reported this it looks like you were generating 4 sitemap-galleries files based on your screenshots (sitemap-galleries-0, sitemap-galleries-1, sitemap-galleries-2, and sitemap-galleries-3). When I pull your sitemaps now I see there are now 17 (0 through 16), obviously this would make them much smaller.

I remember seeing some changes to the code a little while ago that I think is what fixed the sitemaps. Perhaps what has happened is that when you reported this your sitemaps had not yet been re-generated with that fix.

Can you confirm for me if in webmaster tools you are still showing 4 sitemap-galleries, or are you now seeing 17? And has that error changed at all?

    Thanks!

    - Greg

    UPDATE: fixed

I've been working with SmugMug engineer Greg on this and he figured out how to fix it on SM's end. I went from all red X's in my sitemap via google webmaster tools to this:

    Submitted URLs
    390,731
    18,800 URLs in web index

I expect that the number of URLs in web index will increase dramatically over the next few weeks.

    Thanks Greg!!
