A silly question I know. When using a battery pack with the 580ex2 is there any benefit to having batteries inside the flash as well, or are they totally redundant?

I believe that you "must" have batteries in the flash as well as in the high-voltage power supply. The batteries in the flash no longer supply the primary charging power for the flash, but they do power the other electronics of the flash including the control circuits of the flash.

Altogether you will get faster charging as well as approximately 3 times more flashes using the external high-voltage power supply attached to the flash.
